Labeled as a links, the course has thick and tall rough with deep bunkering, narrow fairways and tricky greens. The course is also featured on the rota of courses used by the R&A for the Open Championship and is consistently rated as one of the top ten courses in the world. Designed by Old Tom Morris and opened in 1891, Muirfield has been host to The Open 15 times with the most recent being in 2002 when Ernie Els won his first Open Championship.
Muirfield was the first course designed in two loops of nine holes, the first nine going round the perimeter of the property in a clockwise direction, the second nine contained inside the first, running anticlockwise, and since never more than three successive holes run in the same direction, any wind that blows afflicts the golfer from all points during a round.
