DUBAI CREEK GOLF & YACHT CLUB COURSE TO OPEN FOR VISITORS IN MAY
Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club closed its golf operations for approximately one year from December 2003. And if the old DCGYC course was good, the new one promises to be even better when it re-opens.
"The Creek has always boasted of an enjoyable course and despite the extensive work that is being undertaken, we will still ensure that its reputation is kept intact," promised Chris May, general manager of the DCGYC.
The modification of the Creek course is only part of a bigger scheme of things undertaken. Park Hyatt will operate a new 238-room luxury hotel at the same venue, starting from August 2005.
The new DCGYC course will now feature a par-71 challenge over a course measuring around 6,800 yards. "The ninth hole was a par-5, but we've cut it down to a par-4 with a changed location," May said.
The course is being re-developed by European Golf Design in association with the Dubai-based Ryder Cup star and former Dubai Desert Classic champion, Thomas Bjorn.
"With his vast experience on the European Tour, Thomas Bjorn will give this course a unique character which is sure to be a hit among visitors here," May stated.
Laying of the grass on the fairways has already commenced and should take another six weeks to be complete. "The well-groomed fairways lined with date and coconut palms will be seen once again as you pass by," May disclosed.
Also changing will be the lakes on the golf course with a brand new lake being added on the sixth hole. "All the lakes will have stone walls and this will give the lakes a pretty and more appealing look," the DCGYC official said.
The back nine holes stay on the same location as also the academy and the clubhouse.
"The par-3 course will be changed along with a water hazard being added and the driving range will be longer and wider," May stated. "Thomas Bjorn visited the course a couple of weeks back and he was very pleased with the progress being made so far," May said.
