Golf in Sweden is increasingly popular with a 72% increase in the number of Swedish golf courses built during the 1990s. With the highest percentage of the population playing golf of any country in the world, demand far outstrips the current supply. Look out for several new courses to be developed over the coming years. The profile of the game has been raised by world class, home grown talent, such as Annika Sorenstam and Jesper Parnevik. Parnevik may not have set the world on fire with his game but a combination of appearances at international events over nearly 10 years and an eccentric sense of fashion, set him apart and enhanced his, and Sweden’s, celebrity status. The enthusiasm for golf in Sweden plays a huge part in its visitor’s enjoyment of the game. This is a country truly passionate about golf. The first Swedish golf club, Gothenburg, was founded in 1902 and was quickly followed two years later by Stockholm. Highly recommended is the Kungsängen Golf Club which is a leading Swedish golf venue featuring two 18 hole courses; the King's, measuring 6,149 metres with a par of 72, and the Queen's, measuring 5,546 metres with a par of 70. The golf club is situated only 25 minutes from Stockholm, and is the ideal venue to enjoy a round of golf and enjoy the luxurious facilities within the recently refurbished clubhouse.
