Although increasingly popular with over 120,000 members spread across 150 clubs, Norway is not a high profile golfing destination. Due to the fact that snow covers much of the country for much of the year, ski-ing is by far the most popular sporting pastime. Having said that there is no denying that Golf in Norway is growing in popularity and the standards of Norwegian Golf Courses and facilities are improving. Golf in Norway is of course dictated by the weather. The heavy snow means that courses are only open for 6 months of the year, and when the snow thaws and the courses open, you will not find the perfectly manicured fairways and greens you would find elsewhere in Europe. What you will find however, is a warm and friendly welcome and a much more laid back and laissez-faire attitude to golfing than in the other countries of Europe. The Gulf Stream which impacts the west coast brings pleasant warmth between April and Octobers and it is this side of the country between Oslo and Bergen where the best Norwegian Golf Courses are to be found. Particularly worth mentioning is the Miklagard Golf Course, around 20km North of Oslo this hilly Robert Trent Jones Jr design is considered to be one of the best Golf Courses in Scandinavia.
