DESCRIPTION

Considered by many to be the finest championship venue of all. Royal Birkdale has hosted every major event including 8 Open Championships, 2 Ryder Cups (including the famous competition of 1969), Walker Cups and Curtis Cups.

The present course is the result of a number of re-designs and developments. Between hosting the 1991 and 1998 Open Championships all the greens were re-designed and completely re-built to provide fine, firm putting surfaces. Essentially, each hole runs in the valley between the towering sandhills, the problems are clearly stated but if you stray from the fairway the sandhills, buckthorn and scrub can be punitive.
