For more than 100 years the Royal Melbourne Golf Club has been at the pinnacle of the game in Australia, its courses being the oldest and most well renowned in the country and the most celebrated in the Southern Hemisphere.
The greens are simply brilliant and for decades have consistently provided the finest putting surfaces in Australia. Large and beautifully contoured they are built to accommodate approaches from a number of angles with each progressively more difficult the further the tee shot strays from the perfect line.
Royal Melbourne's West Course was designed in 1926 by the renowned Scottish golf architect, Dr Alister Mackenzie, working with the help of Alex Russell and Mick Morcom (Head Greenkeeper). The course is deserving of the word masterpiece being a combination of stunning land, intelligent design and carefull construction. As one works their way round they find the course dramatically unfolds fresh challenges at every corner yet the course has a simple and timeless charm. The course is lightening-fast, which makes it especially hard to avoid the large bunkers and the fairways are lined with forests which errant shots will easily end up in.
The East Course at Royal Melbourne Golf Club was designed by Alex Russell in 1932. Sharing a number of characteristics with the West course such as fast greens and deep forests, the East Course is perhaps less celebrated than its Western sibling but that should not suggest that it is any less enjoyable.
The Royal Melbourne Golf Club also has a composite circuit which takes 12 holes from the West Course and 6 from the East to create a fresh challenge which is often used for the many prestigious tournaments which are played at Royal Melbourne Golf Club each year.
Considered a classic the world over, and constantly being named as one of the planets "must play" courses, Royal Melbourne Gold Club is a truly wonderful course which should be named alongside the best in the world.
